What is Diatomaceous Earth and what can it do?

Updated: Feb 6, 2023

Safe and organic by nature, Diatomaceous Earth is used to naturally control parasites, flies, and pests in your pets, livestock, and garden as well as add silica and vital water retention to your soil, plants, and garden.

Diatomaceous Earth, also known as DE, is a naturally occurring, soft, siliceous sedimentary rock that is composed of the fossilized remains of diatoms, single-celled algae. In recent years, it has become increasingly popular as a natural solution for various health and environmental problems.

DE is also rich in silica. The beneficial effects of Silica have been shown to have a direct effect on improving the health of our pets, crop and livestock productivity, improving soil fertility, increasing plant health, and reducing water requirements.

Animal Health Benefits of Diatomaceous Earth:

DE is rich in silica, which is essential for maintaining the health of our animal’s digestive system, including the stomach and intestines. It also helps to flush out harmful toxins and parasites, promoting overall digestive health.

Silica has been shown to improve the strength of the immune system, making it easier for the body to fight off infections and illnesses.

Silica is essential for the formation and maintenance of strong bones and joints. By supplementing with DE, you can support the health of your animal’s bones and joints and prevent the onset of osteoporosis and other age-related conditions.

Biting insects like buffalo flies, mosquitoes and midges can cause discomfort for horses, cattle, pigs, and sheep, and can even lead to three-day sickness or Bovine Ephemeral Fever. Unlike chemical fly control, there is no withholding period when using DE. When flies and insects come in contact with the fine DE micro shards they are cut and the DE, being super porous, deters and dehydrates them.

Environmental Benefits of Diatomaceous Earth:

DE can be used as a natural alternative to chemical pesticides. Its sharp edges cut through the exoskeleton of insects, causing them to dehydrate and die. It is safe to use around food, pets, and children and is effective against a wide range of pests, including bed bugs, ants, fleas, and more.

When used in animal feed and spread throughout the enclosers, DE helps to reduce the smell of waste produced by housepets like cats and dogs, livestock including horses, cattle, pigs, and sheep, and poultry like chickens and turkeys. This not only helps to minimise the environmental impact of animal agriculture, but it also results in healthier and more productive animals.

As DE is amorphous, meaning porous like a sponge so when you mix DE into the soil, it absorbs and holds water. This added retention of water and nutrients lessens the stress felt by plants when in a state of inattention or in a drought. Diatomaceous Earth captures and holds nutrients and water in the plants' root zone, meaning that the plant can absorb more over time, boosting its health and vitality all the while saving water and fertiliser cost by lessening the amount of irrigation and inputs needed. This is very popular with nurseries, as they can drastically reduce the amount of water they need to give their seedlings.

Diatomaceous Grades

When DE comes out of the ground it comes out in massive chunks or slabs which we air dry and then mill to make various thicknesses or grades as we call them. Different grades are designed for different uses.

Being the finest grade makes it the safest and easiest grade of diatomaceous earth to use as an internal supplement mixed into their feed for pets and livestock, a fly and flea control dust and as a natural insecticide and pesticide.

Used for: Feed supplement for pets and livestock, natural insecticide and pesticide, oil absorption and spill kits, grain storage,

The 2 – 4 mm is the granular size that works the best with poultry as a pest and flea-controlling dust, a waste deodouriser, and as an internal parasite control. Being so high in silica, DE when given as a feed supplement, helps promote strong eggs and shiny feathers.

Used for: Poultry dusting, feed supplement, agriculture, home gardens

This grade starts to get more coarse and has more pea to grape-sized chunks perfect for soaking up all the waste and bad smells. It's natural, it's safe, and it can be thrown into your garden to be broken down as a fertiliser.

Used for: Kitty litter, gardens

As the heaviest grade of DE, means it has the most coarse texture and chunks which are perfect for holding lots of water.

Used for: Garden, nurseries, farms, and orchards

The Wrap

Diatomaceous earth is a versatile, natural solution for a wide range of health and environmental problems. Whether you are looking to improve the digestive health and immune system of your pets, or create a cleaner and safer environment, DE is definitely worth considering.

Find the right Diatomaceous Earth grade for your garden, pets, livestock and home now.

Note: Please be careful not to inhale the DE as like most minerals they can be potentially harmful once inhaled. When using DE we recommend wearing a protective mask for your own safety and well being.
